RStudio frozen; won't process any command lines, or quit or package installation etc

Hello,

I'm facing a totally stuck RStudio these days. Just when pressing '1' in the command line, the interface is left apathetic with just the cursor blinking.

The CPU usage is quite high though, indicating some strong activity in the background.

When I try to 'Quit' R, nothing moves, and when I try to install packages, the message 'Retrieving package installation context' keeps on displaying with the turning wheel spinning for ages.

I re-installed the latest version of R this morning, and nothing changed.

Any idea of what the problem is, as this is particularly awkward?

I was lucky to be able to produce a diagnostic report, which I paste here below.

Many thanks for your help,
DS

I think this could be an incompatibility problem with your video driver, try changing to software rendering

Hi andresrcs, thanks for the suggestion.
The thing though is that I cannot even have access to the 'Global Options' or 'Debugging help' tiles or whatever - they're just unresponsive.
I guess the rendering engine would not impact to such extent.
Best

Actually, it can.

If you are using the latest stable version, you can change it by holding the Ctrl key while opening RStudio, then you should see this menu to change the "Rendering Engine" to "Software".

Thanks andresrcs for the 'ctrl' trick.
I changed the 'Rendering Engine' option to 'Software' as advised and restarted R, but still no status change.

To rule out some common problem sources:

  • Try resenting RStudio's state
  • If you have modified your Rprofile.site file, check if the code there could be causing the problem.
  • Delete any .RData file present in your defaul working directory (have in mind that this will delete all objects in your working environment)

Thanks andrercs - Resetting Desktop State fixed the situation - don't know why this was problematic though.

If your question's been answered (even by you!), would you mind choosing a solution? It helps other people see which questions still need help, or find solutions if they have similar problems. Here’s how to do it:
