Multiple Problems with changing dictionary

I had a couple of problems with activating German spell check and setting it back to English.

Dictionary not working properly

Since I now write my papers in Quarto using Rstudio, I need German spellchecking. I installed additional dictionaries as outlined here - everything is where it should be (i.e. in ~/.config/rstudio/dictionaries/languages-system/, I use a MacBook). Additionally, I set up a custom dictionary with words specific for my fields of research and purposes. However, I get a lot of misspelling indications, particularly (if not exclusively?) for words containing umlaute like ä - ü - ö. Even very common words are not recognised. Sometimes strange replacements are suggested, i.e. häufig -> häufig. To me this indicates some sort problem related to formatting of characters in the dictionaries. I already…

I observed the following weird behavior

1. Changing the project dictionary also changes the global dictionary
2. After changing the project dictionary RStudios spell-check susipiciously quick pretends that the document is free of spell-errors (it actually does nothing). After restarting RStudio the spell-check works.
3. After changing the global project dictionary there is a warning that one should restart RStudio IF one presses but not if one presses . What is the difference between and ??
4. Suspicious: under ~/.config/rstudio I observe two directories "dictionaries" and "Dictionaries" with "de-DE-3-0.bdic" in "Dictionaries" and everything else in "dictionaries".

I am under Ubuntu 24.04
with latest Rstudio 2026.01.0-392
