Using R Studio for Stats on Mac

Using r studio for advanced analytics for behavioral science. Having trouble uploading html & excel files to r studio for an assignment. I can view & download files from internet to Macbook but when I try to upload to R studio using Session > Set Working Directory > Choose Directory, the files appear greyed out on the docs window. I cannot upload them from desktop, documents or downloads. I understand this should work better on windows however I cannot access that. 2020 M1 Sonoma 14.2.1

Setting the working directory means selecting a folder. You cannot set a file as a directory so they are greyed out. Why not use the Finder to copy the files to your current working directory, or a folder in that location?
