User login migration from Shinyapps to Connect Cloud: do users have to create a new account?

We are currently working on migrating a shiny app with a large number of authenticated users hosted on shinyapps.io to connect cloud and want the migration to be as seamless as possible for our users. If we redeploy the app on connect cloud and add all the same emails as authenticated users, will they have to create a new "connect cloud" account, or are the accounts that they created for shinyapps.io shared with the connect cloud user system? (We are trying to avoid the confusion of users having to create a new account under what visually seems like the same system) Thanks!

Hello, we'll be sending an email next week with an updated process and timeline for the migration. It will describe a proactive migration tool that is currently being built into Connect Cloud. Here is a preview:

  • A proactive migration tool will be added to Connect Cloud by September. This will enable users to sync with their shinyapps.io accounts to kick off the migration process for individual specific applications or all applications at once. The migration for each piece of content will have multiple stages. First users can deploy the app to Connect Cloud. Then they can test that it works as expected. Finally, they can finalize the migration, which will create a redirect from the old shinyapps.io URL to the new Connect Cloud URL and archive the app on shinyapps.io.

As part of that process, we will also bring over the authorized users for each piece of content. These people will continue to be able to use their same login method as they were on shinyapps.io. This is possible because we used a shared user identify across our hosted platforms.

Hope this helps - more next week.

Alex

Awesome. The shared user identify is what we were hoping for.

Excited for the migration tool!
