Usage credit enforcement and migrated app sizing after shinyapps.io → Connect Cloud auto-migration

Hi all,

We're a shinyapps.io Basic customer auto-mapping to Connect Cloud Enhanced (auto-migration March 31, 2027). We've read the migration guide, the migration tool docs, and the usage credits docs, and have a few questions the docs don't cover.

Context. shinyapps.io Basic gives 500 active hours/mo, counted by uptime regardless of instance size. Connect Cloud Enhanced gives 200 credits/mo, where credits/hr = CPU × 0.75 + GB × 0.25. Using our last three months of shinyapps.io usage (via rsconnect::showUsage()), our same workload comes to ~26% of our shinyapps.io hours but an estimated ~256 credits/mo on Connect Cloud (~128% of the Enhanced allowance), mostly from one 8 GB app.

Questions:

  1. Enforcement. The docs say usage credit limits are "not currently enforced." Is there a planned date for enforcement, and will legacy (migrated) customers get notice beforehand?

  2. Overage. Once enforced, what happens when an account exceeds its monthly credits: overage charges, throttling, or content stopped?

Thanks!

Hello - thanks for the post and for testing this with your own usage numbers.

On enforcement: we plan to enforce limits for free users starting in November. For paid users, we'll likely not enforce it until the first half of 2027. We're still collecting usage data to validate the right credit levels, and the goal is for nearly all customers to stay under their limit. The credit system is there to guard against runaway usage, not to charge more for normal workloads.

On overage: once enforcement starts, we intend to notify accounts before anything happens, and we plan to let customers opt in to overages if they do exceed their monthly credits. That's meant for the small number of cases larger apps with large amounts of traffic push users over.

We also hope that the new usage data and performance metrics can help users better determine the right size compute settings to select.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Best,

Alex
