Luis Torgo - Estimation and Experimental Comparison of Predictive Models

Date: 2018-05-15 at 12:00
Location: Halifax, Canada

Description

Book Giveaway: Attend this seminar for a chance to receive a copy of the book "Data Mining in R: Learning With Case Studies" authored by Dr. Torgo. Only 1 copy is available.

"This seminar will describe some of the main features of the R package performanceEstimation. This package provides a general infra-structure to compare and evaluate any approach (workflow) to solve any predictive task (classification, regression or time series). The main goals of the package are: (i) to be very simple to use for "business as usual"
comparative experiments; and (ii) to be flexible enough to be possible to use it on very specific experimental settings (e.g. I want to try my new fancy approach that involves my special algorithm, some data-preprocessing steps and some special post-processing stages, on a set of tasks, and I want to evaluate it using some hand-crafted evaluation metrics).

We will illustrate several of these usage cases. Finally, we will also give examples of the implementation in the package of statistical significance tests along the lines described in the now famous JMLR paper by Demsar (2006), namely through the post-hoc Nemenyi and Bonferroni-Dunn tests and also the associated CD diagrams.

"Micro location rating in real estate"
Jacqueline Schweizer, Wüest Partner

In the world of real estate “location” seems to be a key term. Location
has substantial influence when appraising a house or an apartment.
However, there are different perspectives and spatial levels where one
can determine the quality of location. The time and effort needed to
qualify a location as “good” or “bad” have historically been strongly
based on human resources. The evaluators had to travel on the premises, ask
around, research further online, and establish a rating that needed to
be as free of subjective values as possible, but never truly turned out
to be...

Git happieR with GitHub

Date: 2018-05-16 at 18:00
Location: Philadelphia, United States

Description

Version control with Git is becoming an essential tool in the data scientist’s toolkit. However, Git and GitHub can be confusing and many R users put off learning and using Git, even when it could enhance their work and careers!

How does R-Ladies Philly use Git? We use GitHub to share materials for meetups, to collaborate on community projects, and to create and publish our website/blog!

We are planning an interactive introduction to Git and GitHub with a focus on how you might use it with R. If you are an expert Git user, we would really encourage you to also attend as an opportunity to help other less experienced users.

Agenda:
• 6pm – gather and eat pizza. Some time for troubleshooting installation questions.
• 6:30 – Announcements and main session
• 7:30 – Lightning talk, followed by informal continued discussions and networking

What to bring:
• Bring a laptop to follow along and participate

Before the meetup:
• We are asking that attendees register for a GitHub account and install Git ahead of time
• Recommended reading: http://happygitwithr.com
• To register for a github account:
o https://github.com
• Install git version appropriate for your OS:
o https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Getting-Started-Installing-Git
• We will talk about using RStudio as a git client, but a separate client can be useful:
o https://desktop.github.com
• For those that are comfortable with the command line, there is a free Datacamp course:
o https://www.datacamp.com/courses/introduction-to-git-for-data-science

We can't wait to see you!

Sensing human behaviour with online data - Suzy Moat & Tobias Preis

Date: 2018-05-17 at 18:00
Location: Coventry, United Kingdom

Description

Title:
Sensing human behaviour with online data

Abstract:
Our everyday usage of the Internet leaves volumes of data in its wake. Can we use this data to help us reduce delays and costs in measuring human behaviour, or even to measure behaviour we couldn’t measure before? Here, we will outline a number of studies carried out at the Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School, investigating whether online data can help us monitor disease levels, measure global travel patterns, and evaluate whether the beauty of the environment we live in might affect our health. We will discuss some of the challenges in generating estimates of human behaviour from online data when our relationship with Internet services continues to evolve at such rapid pace.

Speakers:
Suzy Moat is an Associate Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School, where she co-directs the Data Science Lab. She is also a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute. Her research investigates whether data on our usage of the Internet, from sources such as Google, Wikipedia and Flickr, can help us measure and even predict human behaviour in the real world.

Tobias Preis is a Professor of Behavioural Science and Finance at the University of Warwick and a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.

R and Python study group

Date: 2018-05-19 at 10:00
Location: West des Moines, United States

Description

Are you tired of learning and playing with Python and R alone? Would you like to get together with a few friends and learn together? I have been starting to learn R and Python for data science and following the typical route of videos and practice projects. I really want to ramp up my learning and exposure to different ways. Here is my proposal:

- Gather a small group of 2-5 and learn together.
- Meet at a coffee shop, library, or some other space that has Wi-Fi.
- Pick a project, data set or problem, then work to solve it with different tools.
- Keep it fluid and informal.
- Meet on a regular basis, say weekly to start, and adjust as needed.
- Aim to keep the meetings 2-4 hours long, but this can be adjusted to the project or group. People can come and go as needed.
- It does not have to be the same people each time, so you only have to commit to going once to check it out.

Are you interested? Show up at the meeting spot, have some coffee, meet new friends and bring a project or question.
