Linear Regression in R

2018-05-03 at 18:00
Location: Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description

Linear Regression is the "starter" model of all data science curriculum. This presentation introduces the linear regression model in an unorthodox way and explores how R builds a regression model using lm() function. Mathematical foundations of regression are deliberately avoided to introduction to linear regression as friendly way as possible.

6:30 PM - 7:15 PM Presentation

7:15 PM - 8:00 PM Q&A, Networking, random chats

Using Git + GitHub with R

Date: 2018-05-01 at 17:30
Location: Charlottesville, United States

Description -

So you've written some awesome code - now what?

Instead of leaving it untouched in local limbo, it's time to push it to an online repository for you to share with the world. Collaboration and version control are the backbone of data science, and regardless of your level of experience being comfortable working with the command line is a valuable tool.

Join us on Tuesday, May 1st, at VividCortex for a hand-on workshop using Git, GitHub, and R. Whether you're using the command line for the first time or just brushing up on your skills, all programming levels are encouraged to attend.

2 Talks: Michael Kane on fc package and Kyle Burkett on R at Progressive

Date: 2018-05-02 at 18:00
Location: Independence, United States

Description -

NOTE the change to 5/2

Talk 1:
Generalized function composition and pipe construction with the fc package*

The "pipe" operator is a convenient way to define sequences of functions. Implementations like magrittr's %>% work by modifying unevaluated expressions to create functions that are called serially using the convention that intermediate values are stored as a variable named "." This approach results in "pipelines" that may be easier to read (but are often slower) when compared to "unpiped" alternatives. In this talk, I'll show an alternative pipe implementation that does not rely on non-standard evaluation. Pipeline construction with this new package is slightly less compact than tidyverse equivalents but often yields more performant functions whose definitions are easy to read.

Michael Kane is an Assistant Professor in Yale University's Biostatistics Department. His research interests are in the areas of scalable statistical/machine learning, statistical computing, and early-phase clinical trials.

Talk 2:
How do you deploy and manage R look like at a fortune 200 company? Do you use Windows or Linux? What version? What packages? What difficulties do you face and how do you make RAM available with large datasets? Join us as Kyle Burkett, IT Systems Analyst Lead, talks a bit about his experiences as the owner and maintainer of all things 'R' at Progressive Insurance.

MLDM Monday | 美國職棒大聯盟(MLB)與數據分析

Date: 2018-05-05 at 15:00
Location: Taipei, Taiwan

Description -

R and Python study group

Date: 2018-05-05 at 10:00
Location: West des Moines, United States

Description -

Are you tired of learning and playing with Python and R alone? Would you like to get together with a few friends and learn together? I have been starting to learn R and Python for data science and following the typical route of videos and practice projects. I really want to ramp up my learning and exposure to different ways. Here is my proposal:

- Gather a small group of 2-5 and learn together.
- Meet at a coffee shop, library, or some other space that has Wi-Fi.
- Pick a project, data set or problem, then work to solve it with different tools.
- Keep it fluid and informal.
- Meet on a regular basis, say weekly to start, and adjust as needed.
- Aim to keep the meetings 2-4 hours long, but this can be adjusted to the project or group. People can come and go as needed.
- It does not have to be the same people each time, so you only have to commit to going once to check it out.

Are you interested? Show up at the meeting spot, have some coffee, meet new friends and bring a project or question.

Filling your data science backpack: applying statistical models to data with R

Date: 2018-05-05 at 12:00
Location: Dallas, United States

Description -

• What we'll do
Finding your bearings in data science can be difficult. Often it feels like you've been dropped in the wilderness and are just trying to survive with the contents of your backpack - and you packed all the wrong things.

Our goal as RLadies Dallas is to start helping members fill their "data science backpack" with the skills and content knowledge needed to not only survive as data scientists (who use R), but to thrive as data scientists, no matter the environment.

This will be a collaborative workshop where we outline the data science workflow and practice moving through the workflow using our own data sets and the tidyverse, with a particular focus on applying statistical models to a data set.

Members are encouraged to have read through "OpenIntro Statistics" up to the point that they feel comfortable. That might be the whole text for some members, or half of chapter one for others. There's no judgement or expectation, we just ask that you do your best!

For those comfortable with the majority of the contents, you will be expected to take on leadership roles and mentor those still learning, while those learning should come prepared to ask questions. It's entirely possible that you're a mentor for some chapters, and a learner in others, and that's awesome! The goal is for both learners and mentors to develop a deeper understanding of statistical models and how to apply them to data sets that we use in our research, jobs, and/or hobbies.

*** please note *** we will be discussing whether or not the "OpenIntro Statistics" text is the text we'd like to use for this meetup in our Slack group. If we choose a different text, this posting will be updated to reflect that.

• What to bring
A laptop that can connect to the internet
A data set to work on (if you have one - if not, we will provide examples you can use)
Any food or drinks for personal consumption
Clothing layers - the temperature in the space can fluctuate

• Important to know
OpenIntro Statistics is available for free online here: https://www.openintro.org/stat/textbook.php?stat_book=os

If you need assistance setting up Slack, installing R, installing RStudio or finding a dataset, please email dallas [at] rladies [dot] org and we'll get you squared away!

We know that not everyone lives close by - please coordinate rideshares in our #rideshares channel in Slack. If you cannot attend in person, email dallas [at] rladies [dot] org so we can set up the technology for you to join us via Zoom.
