Abstract
After 50 year of both left and right political consensus on the role of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/ The Treaty of Waitangi, the present right-wing government has decided to try and redefine the meaning and role of the Treaty. This has provoked record sized protests from the people of New Zealand in support of the Treaty. With the deadline for submissions on the proposed bill approaching I thought I would use closeread to give my context.
Full Description
The Treaty of Waitangi is a foundational document for New Zealand. For those who are not familiar but interested, I suggest starting with obvious locations like Wikipedia, but also look at works produced by scholars such as Claudia Orange.
I, born an raised in New Zealand through the period of better understanding of the Treaty, do not want to go back to the injustices that were occurring before acceptance was widespread, so I decided to take the opportunity of trying out closeread for the first time to document my understanding of the history of how we got here.
