Shiny Module Error in func(fname, ...) : app.R did not return a shiny.appobj object

When I try to run any of the Shiny module examples in Chapter 19 of Mastering shiny, I get the following error
"Error in func(fname, ...) : app.R did not return a shiny.appobj object". I have looked at similar posts which are not very informative. Is it possible that this is not a coding error?
