SBC Marine Biodiversity Observation Network - Shiny Contest Submission

SBC Marine Biodiversity Observation Network

Authors: Amelia L. Ritger

Abstract: This app allows users to visualize benthic survey data collected in kelp forest communities in the Santa Barbara Channel (SBC). Users can explore the species captured in the data; visualize benthic richness, diversity, and organismal abundance; and compare ecological communities across SBC kelp forests.

Full Description: This shiny app allows users to visualize data collected from benthic surveys conducted by Marine Biodiversity Observation Network scientists in the Santa Barbara Channel. The first tab (“About the critters”) allows users to explore the organisms found in the data set – through photos, a hierarchical tree, and a link generator to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). The second tab (“Diversity”) allows users to visualize species richness and diversity at all locations across the Santa Barbara Channel – through an interactive map and corresponding bar graph. The third tab (“Abundance”) allows users to visualize organismal abundance (at the phylum or species level) at all locations across the Santa Barbara Channel – through an interactive map and corresponding bar graph. The fourth tab (“Community”) allows users to compare the ecological communities (at the phylum level) at each location in the Santa Barbara Channel, subset for vertical or horizontal surfaces on the reef. Users have the option to display Sankey diagrams alongside a bar graph of the data, and selecting each location generates a photo of an example quadrat from that location (the same quadrat photos used for data generation). The fifth and final tab (“Neighbors”) allows users to compare organismal co-occurrence (at the phylum level) at one or more locations in the Santa Barbara Channel. Users have the option to display a heat maps alongside the graph and table presenting the data.
