As in the title - do not really know if it is a bug, setting or a purposeful effect.
Is there a way to change it? Other than changing folder names of course ;).
On the Files tab, there is a drop down list with a gear icon and the text More. That list has the option Show Hidden Files. Turning that on lists files with a leading . in the name on my system.
