Rstudio crashing upon opening

Hi, im having issues getting Rstudio up and running on my computer running Mint18.3.
I'm pretty new to linux, so let me know anything else I may need to add to these details (and how to go about
retrieving them)

When I attempt to run Rstudio the following pops up:
The R session had a fatal error.

This error was very likely caused by R attempting to load packages from a different incompatible version of R on your system. Please remove other versions of R and/or remove environment variables that reference libraries from other versions of R before proceeding.

Hi Scott, have you tried uninstalling and re-installing R and RStudio?

I had already done a couple clean reinstall, forgot to mention that.
The rstudio desktop directory is as follows:
ctx folder: empty
log folder: rdesktop.log rsession-scott.log
monitored folder -> user-settings folder -> user-setting file
project setting folder: empty
sessions folder -> active folder: empty

Did you build R from source yourself? If so, you need to instruct R to build with a shared library libR.so. See R Installation and Administration for more details. In particular, you need to configure R with --enable-R-shlib.

Thanks for that, got it working!
I hadn't install R from source, i had just used:
sudo apt-get r-base r-base-dev etc...
A clean reinstall from tar.gz with your recommendations worked.
