RStudio 2026.07.1+147 crashing with R 4.6.1 for Mac OS (Apple silicon) installed

After updating both RStudio (to 2026.07.1+147) and R (from 4.5.2 to 4.6.1), I experienced repeated crashes on the RStudio side whenever I opened one of my existing R scripts. Unfortunately, no obvious diagnostic error messages appeared during these events.

After multiple reinstalls of both products (and multiple subsequent crashes), I tried opening an R project file, I finally got a diagnostic error message telling me that 2026.07.1+147 was not compatible with R beyond version 4.6.0. After downgrading to 4.6.0, everything seemed to work as expected.

If this is a known issue, would it be possible to document it somewhere?

confirmed there are multiple and likely interrelated issues with latest RStudio and R 4.6.1

There are no known problems with RStudio and R 4.6.1, I'm using it with that same version of RStudio on an ARM Mac.

That said, always possible there are unknown problems.

We did bump the maximum version to stop giving the warning about 4.6.1 being too new, here: Bump maximum supported R version to 4.6.1 by gtritchie · Pull Request #18177 · rstudio/rstudio · GitHub (for RStudio 2026.08).

Please open an issue with as many details as you can provide, and we'll continue the investigation from there.

That is a different issue. This thread is about RStudio sessions failing on macOS with R 4.6.1, not with publishing content.

I get a similar/different result (Version 2026.07.1+147 and R 4.6.1 on OSX M1) - call to ggplotly scrambles my Rstudio display so that I can only quit.

Apologies if this is posted to the wrong thread

Oh, just thinking... maybe it's related to my recent OSX update (Tahoe 26.6) so maybe I should wait for 26.6.1
