recursive gc collection then R Session Aborted: any pointers please

After years of smooth running with RStudio/R on Windows 10 I am getting intermittent errors. A common one is 3-4 errors on the console "recursive gc collection" followed by pop-up announcing "R Session Aborted"
There is not a common theme as to what is running at the time.

I have just reinstalled R/RStudio to latest versions (which they were before) and still get the error.

The one change I made recently was to move packages to a common area (not under the user folders) and those packages are shared by 2 of my user IDs.

Any pointers on how to troubleshoot this please?
