pandoc error when kniting html files

For quite a long time I have had issues kniting html files and diagnosing the problem has been problematic because whatever the issue it its interment.

Currently I can knit either a R notebook or R Project file, without error, as a html file when saved to a local data drive (D:) but receive a pandoc error when saving to a network drive (N:).

I've been told and read when network paths have a combination of forward and backward slashed (/ or ) it causes problems and to use mapped network drives (i.e. N:\My _Neetwork_drive). So I have created a custom .RProfile which sometimes works. I can't modify the .RProfile on my C:\ drive due to admin restrictions.

While the custom .RProfile seems to be the best option where should I place it. I typically place one within my R project dir but that doesn't always work and now I'm reading about .Renviron files.

So my quest is if a customize .RProfile file is the best option what the best location (my C:\ is not an option) and what is a good reference discussing .RProfile and .Renviron files and how to use them properly.
