Page Numbers R Markdown Powerpoint

Does anyone know if R Markdown can include page numbers when rendering a PowerPoint?

The below is an old post but it doesn't provide a clear answer and perhaps someone can do so now.

Page number on Powerpoint generated by R Markdown

I am trying to generate a ppt using the simple example from Bookdown (https://bookdown.org/yihui/rmarkdown/powerpoint-presentation.html) and using an edited template (potx) from Powerpoint. The problem is that footnotes, date and page number do no show up in the final ppt. But they are in the master slide. Does anyone know what I should do?

I did just note that a page number can be added the powerpoint after the rendering - slight inconvenience but at least it can be added after the fact.
