New Posit Assistant only works when signed out of GitHub; signed in uses old Positron Assistant

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble using the new Posit Assistant in Positron.

I switched from GitHub Copilot to Posit AI as my provider.

The issue seems to depend on whether I am signed in to GitHub through the Positron Accounts menu.

My setup

  • OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26200
  • Positron Version: 2026.05.2 (system setup) build 3

Problem

When I am signed in to GitHub in Positron, I can only use the old Positron Assistant. The new Posit Assistant does not work as expected. It seems to take forever to load.

However, when I sign out of GitHub, I can use the new Posit Assistant.

What I see

In Configure Language Model Providers, GitHub Copilot is shown as authenticated:

GitHub Copilot authenticated automatically using the Accounts menu.

So GitHub authentication itself seems to work. But when I am signed in, Positron appears to fall back to the old Positron Assistant rather than letting me use the new Posit Assistant.

What I have already tried

I have already tried:

  1. Signing out of GitHub through the Accounts menu.
  2. Restarting Positron.
  3. Signing back in to GitHub.
  4. Opening Configure Language Model Providers.
  5. Use Posit AI instead of GitHub Copilot.
  6. Disabling GitHub Copilot as an Assistant provider in settings.json.
  7. Using minimal Assistant settings.
  8. Reloading the Positron window.

The behavior remains the same: signed in to GitHub, I can only use the old Positron Assistant; signed out of GitHub, the new Posit Assistant works.

Any help would be appreciated.
