I noticed that rstudio has options for the graphics device.
Are there any recommendations for what works best for ggplot2?
My rule of thumb has always been to take the offered default unless there’s a good reason not.

If you install the ragg R package, you can use the ragg backend, which is faster and has better text rendering than the default. We recommend it; the only reason it isn't the default is that not everyone can (or does) install the additional R package needed to use it.
