How does RStudio find R GUI on your desktop

Can someone help me understand how does RStudio finds the R GUI to run during an RStudio session.

To my understanding Rstudio is a GUI for R. Could you explain it better? Does Rstudio find the installed R version? What do you get if you click Tools --> Global Options... --> General?
