I've just stumbled upon the pak package, and it clearly overlaps with remotes quite a bit in its purpose, even though both are part of r-lib and both have been in active development for years. The Future Directions section of the remotes package's maintenance.md suggests that it may be superseded, however remotes is still imported by devtools and renv.
What is the future of the remotes package in the r-lib ecosystem? Should new code be using pak instead at this point? Or are these two packages more different than they appear to me?
