fatal error and poor performance in rStudio but not console

Hello,

I recently received a new work computer (Mac, Sonoma 14.4.1), on this machine I am running rStudio through a virtual instance of Windows 11. This is a similar arrangement that I had working with no issues on my previous machine.

My issue is that rStudio appears to be running commands very slowly (e.g., ~45 sec for setwd) and encounters a fatal error and aborts the session when running a command from the RODBC library (odbcConnectAccess2007). However, performance within the R console appears fine and I encounter no error when running odbcConnectAccess2007.

I have tried an uninstall and reinstall to no avail.

I'm unsure how to sort this one and would be very appreciative of any help! Log file pasted below.

What about to run it from MacOS terminal, or install Bash shell and use the Linux version of Rstudio?

Was your old Mac an Intel-based model, and your new Mac using an ARM processor? That is, Apple Silicon (e.g. M1, M2, etc.)?

If the virtual Windows environment is running directly on your Mac (e.g. via Parallels or VMWare or some other similar technology), then your virtual Windows machine is running RStudio via Intel CPU emulation (there is no ARM version of RStudio for WIndows), and this could account for much of the slowdown.

You'd likely have much better performance running the Mac version of RStudio, but understand that might not be an option in your work environment.

FYI, there is an issue tracking creation of an ARM version of RStudio for Windows, but that's not yet scheduled to be implemented. Add builds for Windows on ARM, for Surface Pro X / Surface Pro 9 / etc. · Issue #11977 · rstudio/rstudio · GitHub
