Error message: Unable to activate visual mode (error parsing code chunks out of document).*

Using RStudio Version 1.4.1103. Visual editor works on some files Tried to use it on several different .Rmd files but get an error message at the top of the pane:
Unable to activate visual mode (error parsing code chunks out of document).

Any suggestions how to find out what this really means?
