does bs4_book theme allow reference list by chapter?

I have moved from standard bookdown to using a bookdown theme: b24_book.
Most chapters in the book have citations to a reference in a bib file.

I have sucessfully created a reference rmd in which a global set of references are displayed but i can not seem to get the references by chapter to appear in each chapter rmd.

Using the standard theme this is possible.

Are there any additional settings required for this to happen in bs4_book theme or this this not possible? Can it be "hacked"?
