Joining up with AD is relatively easy with realm and the steps are explained in this link:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory-domain-services/active-directory-ds-join-rhel-linux-vm

I followed this for my on-prem environment (RHEL 7.3) and followed that up with the steps from the RStudio admin guide as previously referenced.
