Cloud Free Account Usage

I have been using Posit Cloud in my Intro Stats course for several years now, with students using a CLoud Free account. We don't use R heavily, so they rarely exceed the monthly compute hours - only a handful will max out their accounts near the end of the semester.

This spring, I have already had half a dozen or more students who have exceeded their usage, and we have barely used it whatsoever. I suspect that they are leaving the tab open, but I do that all the time and it times out on me without any issue.

Does anyone know of an issue with this, possibly mainly occurring on a Mac? We tend to use Chrome in this class, but I don't know specifically which browser all the students were using.

I have already advised them to actually exit when they are finished working, but I was still hoping for some more info about why this might be a new issue suddenly for this semester when it hasn't happened previously. Or, if there are any settings that we might be able to adjust to force exit/sleep when they are idle.

My class is having the same issue. Multiple accounts had a R file run for 15+ hours on 2/2, including long after the class was finished.

Hi @Teri_Christiansen thank you for reporting this and for sharing the additional details. I’ve responded to your support ticket, but I wanted to provide an update here as well.

Our Cloud Engineering team has confirmed this is a known issue that caused some Posit Cloud projects to accrue excessive compute usage hours. A fix has been released to prevent this from happening for projects opened going forward. The team is continuing to assess the impact for users who may have been affected prior to the fix.
