I have some not particularly large dataframes (e.g. 101 x 434), and when the Summary pane opens, the data viewer hangs for ~20 secs. Clicking on Summary eventually closes the pane, and i can get on with working. For now, is there a way to prevent Summary from opening?

Yes, you can disable the summary pane from showing by default.
In the data viewer, click the tiny little arrow in the upper-right to reveal a menu where you can uncheck "Show Summary panel by default".
