Posit AI Assistant stuck in “Complete setup” death loop

I am using the latest RStudio daily (2026.04.0-daily+451 ) on macOS and Posit AI Assistant is stuck in an endless “Complete setup” loop.

Clicking “Complete setup” opens the browser auth flow --> Browser-side flow succeeds and shows account creation/login success. --> Returning to RStudio does not complete setup; the IDE remains stuck on the assistant setup state.

Log evidence:

  • Detected external login for positai, triggering auth completion flow
  • OAuth completed for positai, refreshing models
  • repeated API fetch failed: API returned 403, using fallback
  • intermittent Failed to start device auth: TypeError: fetch failed
  • repeated Agent process exited with status 143

I have already tried: logging out/in repeatedly; resetting RStudio state; resetting preferences; clearing/restoring workspace-related files; testing in a brand new empty project; updating to the latest daily.

Would appreciate any thoughts on how to access the Assistant again.

I'm having the same problem.

Working on their specific version they link to in the opening page (which is not the most recent daily, its 2026.04.0-daily+381). I don't think "I fixed" anything because it broke originally on this version too. It's currently working, but with lower order issues -- it complains every time that I edit something that I "corrupted" the file and so it has "no choice but to start fresh" and waste ~$15 of tokens rewriting everything from scratch.
